Appropriation Act 2023
What this bill does
This bill authorizes the government to spend $1.2 billion of public money during the 2023-24 financial year (ending March 31, 2024). It sets aside $1.1 billion for day-to-day government operations like salaries, healthcare, education, and public services, plus $96 million for major capital projects like building repairs, road work, and equipment purchases.
If passed (voted YES)
- Government departments can spend their allocated budgets to provide public services like healthcare at KEMH, education in schools, police services, and social programs
- Major infrastructure projects can proceed, including road improvements, school renovations, hospital upgrades, and new government equipment
- The Finance Minister gets flexibility to move money between capital projects if needed, as long as total spending limits aren't exceeded
If rejected (voted NO)
- Government departments cannot legally spend money to operate, potentially shutting down public services
- Infrastructure projects like road repairs, school maintenance, and hospital improvements would be put on hold
- Government employees may not be paid and essential services could be disrupted until a new budget is approved
Who it affects
This affects every person living in Bermuda, as it funds all government services from healthcare and education to roads and public safety. Government employees, students, patients, and anyone who uses public services or infrastructure would be directly impacted by whether this budget is approved.
