What this bill does
This bill changes how the government creates new rules for the building industry. Instead of requiring Parliament to actively approve new regulations, the government will be able to make them automatically unless Parliament objects within a certain time period.
If passed (voted YES)
- The Department of Planning can set new qualifications and standards for building trades (like electricians, plumbers, carpenters) more quickly without waiting for Parliament's approval
- New building regulations will take effect faster, unless Parliament specifically votes to block them
- The government will have more flexibility to update building codes and professional requirements as industry needs change
If rejected (voted NO)
- Parliament must continue to actively vote to approve any new building regulations before they can take effect
- The Department of Planning will continue to face delays when trying to update qualifications or standards for building professionals
- The current slower process for making building industry rules stays in place
Who it affects
This primarily affects building professionals (contractors, electricians, plumbers, etc.) who may see changes to their qualification requirements, and the Department of Planning which oversees building standards. It also affects Parliament's role in reviewing building regulations.
