What this bill does
This bill would legalize cannabis in Bermuda by creating a licensing system for growing, selling, and using cannabis. It would establish a new government authority to regulate the cannabis industry and remove cannabis from the list of illegal drugs under current law.
If passed (voted YES)
- Bermudians could legally grow cannabis at home for personal use or apply for commercial licenses to sell cannabis
- A new Cannabis Licensing Authority would be created to issue licenses and regulate cannabis businesses like retail shops
- Cannabis would no longer be considered an illegal drug in Bermuda, though it would still be regulated like alcohol or tobacco
If rejected (voted NO)
- Cannabis would remain illegal under Bermuda's current drug laws
- People could still face criminal charges for possessing, growing, or selling cannabis
- No legal cannabis industry would be established in Bermuda
Who it affects
This primarily affects all Bermudian adults who would be eligible to use cannabis legally, as well as potential entrepreneurs who want to start cannabis businesses. Only people with Bermudian status who are 21 or older would be eligible to participate in the legal cannabis system.
