Child Day Care Allowance Amendment Act 2023
Simplified for You
What this bill does
This bill changes how Bermuda decides who qualifies for childcare financial assistance. Instead of looking at just one parent's income, the government will now consider the total household income of both parents or spouses living together when determining eligibility and award amounts.
If passed (voted YES)
- Families will have their childcare allowance eligibility based on combined household income rather than individual income
- The Minister can create different income brackets with different maximum allowance amounts for each bracket
- Applications must now include income information for both parents/spouses living in the same household
If rejected (voted NO)
- Childcare allowance eligibility continues to be based on individual applicant income only
- The current system of income assessment remains unchanged
- No new income categories or household-based calculations are introduced
Who it affects
This primarily affects Bermuda families with young children who apply for or receive government childcare allowances, especially two-parent households where both parents work and earn income.
