Government Bill Passed 2021/2022

Contributory Pensions Temporary Amendment Act

Simplified for You

What this bill does

This bill changes the rules about when pension contributions can be suspended. It gives the Finance Minister power to create different 12-month suspension periods for different groups of workers, rather than having just one fixed period for everyone.

If passed (voted YES)

  • The Finance Minister can set different 12-month periods when various categories of workers don't have to pay pension contributions
  • These new suspension periods can be applied retroactively (backdated) to cover past time periods
  • Different worker groups could have their contributions suspended at different times, rather than everyone following the same July 2020 to June 2021 timeline

If rejected (voted NO)

  • Only the original suspension period (July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021) would remain in effect
  • The Finance Minister would not have flexibility to create different suspension periods for different types of workers
  • All contributors would be subject to the same suspension timeline without variation by worker category

Who it affects

This affects all Bermuda workers who pay into the contributory pension system, though different groups of workers could potentially have different suspension periods applied to them based on the Minister's decisions.
