Customs Tariff Amendment Act 2023
What this bill does
This bill changes import taxes (customs duties) on sugary foods and drinks, with higher taxes on high-sugar items and lower taxes on healthier alternatives like nutrition bars. It also creates new duty-free categories for school uniforms, construction materials, sports equipment for Bermuda's international teams, and equipment for personal care businesses like salons and gyms.
If passed (voted YES)
- Sugary drinks, candies, and snacks will have higher import taxes (75%), making them more expensive in stores
- Nutrition bars and drinks with less sugar will have lower import taxes (25%), making them relatively cheaper
- School uniforms, construction aggregate, sports team equipment, and salon/gym equipment can be imported duty-free, reducing costs for these sectors
- Government purchases will automatically get 0% duty instead of variable rates set by the Finance Minister
If rejected (voted NO)
- Current import tax rates on sugary foods and drinks remain unchanged
- No preferential pricing for healthier food alternatives like nutrition bars
- School uniforms, construction materials, and personal care business equipment continue paying regular import duties
- Current duty relief system for government and business imports stays the same
Who it affects
This primarily affects consumers (through food and drink prices), parents buying school uniforms, construction companies, fitness centers, salons, and other personal care businesses. The changes could influence what foods Bermudians buy based on price differences.
