Government Bill Passed 2021/2022

Customs Tariff Amendment (No. 4) Act 2022

Simplified for You

What this bill does

This bill makes a small change to Bermuda's import tax rules for bread. It expands the 0% import duty (no tax) that currently applies to fresh and chilled bread to also include frozen bread.

If passed (voted YES)

  • Frozen bread imported into Bermuda will have 0% import duty, making it cheaper for businesses to bring in
  • Grocery stores and food businesses may be able to offer frozen bread at lower prices to customers
  • The change applies retroactively from November 18, 2022

If rejected (voted NO)

  • Only fresh and chilled bread would continue to have 0% import duty
  • Frozen bread would still be subject to regular import taxes
  • Consumers and businesses might pay higher prices for imported frozen bread products

Who it affects

This mainly affects grocery stores, bakeries, and food importers who bring frozen bread into Bermuda, and could indirectly benefit consumers through potentially lower bread prices.
