Equality Act 2022
Simplified for You
What this bill does
This bill strengthens Bermuda's equality laws by requiring all discrimination-related laws to be interpreted in ways that promote equality. It increases financial penalties for employers who discriminate, creates a new Equality Council to promote workplace equality, and requires government boards to have fair representation based on Bermuda's racial and gender makeup.
If passed (voted YES)
- Employers who discriminate could face much higher fines - up to $100,000 for larger companies compared to current penalties
- A new Equality Council would work to promote equal opportunities for training, advancement, and leadership positions in Bermuda workplaces
- Government boards, committees, and government-owned companies would need to ensure their membership reflects Bermuda's population demographics for race and gender
If rejected (voted NO)
- Current discrimination penalties for employers remain at existing lower levels
- No new body would be created specifically focused on promoting workplace equality and equal pay
- Government appointments would continue under current practices without requirements for demographic representation
Who it affects
This bill affects all Bermuda workers and employers, as well as people seeking appointments to government boards and committees. It particularly impacts those who experience workplace discrimination and those involved in government appointments.
