Government Bill Introduced 2021/2022

Fire Safety Amendment Act

Simplified for You

What this bill does

This bill officially gives the Chief Fire Officer the authority to interpret and enforce fire safety rules (called NFPA Codes) in Bermuda. It also allows the Chief Fire Officer to issue written guidance and directions to help people understand and follow fire safety requirements.

If passed (voted YES)

  • The Chief Fire Officer becomes the official "Authority Having Jurisdiction" with clear legal power to enforce fire safety codes
  • The Chief Fire Officer can issue written guidance to help property owners, businesses, and builders understand fire safety requirements
  • Any fire safety decisions the Chief Fire Officer made since 2018 are officially validated and legally recognized

If rejected (voted NO)

  • Fire safety enforcement continues without this formal legal structure defining the Chief Fire Officer's authority
  • There would be no official process for issuing written guidance on fire safety code interpretation
  • Previous fire safety decisions made by the Chief Fire Officer since 2018 remain in legal uncertainty

Who it affects

This primarily affects property owners, developers, architects, and businesses who must comply with fire safety codes, as they will have clearer guidance on requirements. It also affects the Chief Fire Officer by providing stronger legal authority to enforce fire safety standards across Bermuda.
