Garages Licensing Act 2022
What this bill does
This bill creates a new licensing system for garages and auto repair shops in Bermuda. It replaces the old "public garage" laws with updated rules that require different types of licenses for different services (like car repairs, motorcycle repairs, body work, and car detailing), sets safety standards for garage equipment, and creates a registration system for automotive technicians.
If passed (voted YES)
- All garage and auto repair businesses must get specific licenses from the Transport Control Department and pay annual fees, with different license types for different services
- Garages must meet strict safety requirements including proper fire equipment, safe vehicle lifts, ventilation for spray painting, and no smoking policies
- Auto repair technicians must be registered and certified, and can be suspended if they don't maintain proper standards
If rejected (voted NO)
- The current outdated garage licensing system would remain in place without modern safety standards or clear regulations
- There would be no standardized certification requirements for automotive technicians working on vehicles
- Safety protections like mandatory fire equipment, proper ventilation, and equipment safety standards wouldn't be legally required
Who it affects
This primarily affects garage owners, auto repair shops, car dealerships with service departments, and automotive technicians who will need to meet new licensing and certification requirements. It also affects all Bermuda drivers who use these services, as it aims to ensure higher safety and professional standards.
