Invasive Alien Species Act

What this bill does

This bill creates new laws to control invasive plants and animals that could harm Bermuda's environment, economy, and public health. It sets up a system where some species are completely banned, others require special permits to import or keep, and government can create management plans to remove invasive species from the island.

If passed (voted YES)

• People importing or keeping certain plants and animals would need permits and could face fines up to $50,000 or jail time if they break the rules
• Government would have new powers to enter properties, seize illegal species, and force landowners to remove invasive species from their property
• Three categories of species would be created: completely prohibited species, restricted species requiring permits, and those needing licenses for breeding or selling

If rejected (voted NO)

• Current laws governing invasive species would remain in place without the new comprehensive framework
• No new permit system would be established, and current enforcement powers would stay the same
• Government would not gain the new authority to enter properties or force removal of invasive species from private land

Who it affects

This affects anyone who imports, owns, or breeds plants and animals in Bermuda, including pet owners, gardeners, farmers, and businesses. Property owners could also be impacted if invasive species are found on their land and government requires removal.
