Morgan's Point Company Act 2022
Simplified for You
What this bill does
This bill creates a new government-owned company called "Morgan's Point Company Limited" to buy, develop, and manage land at Morgan's Point. The company will work to develop the area and eventually run businesses there to earn back the government's investment in the land.
If passed (voted YES)
- Government creates a new company run by the Minister of Finance and Minister of Public Works to handle Morgan's Point development
- The company gets certain tax breaks (no foreign currency purchase tax or land tax) but any future tenants or lessees will still pay land tax
- Government can direct the company's activities if it's in the public interest, and taxpayers will cover legal costs for company directors acting in good faith
If rejected (voted NO)
- Morgan's Point land development continues under current arrangements without a dedicated government company
- No new government-owned company is created, so existing government departments handle any Morgan's Point activities
- Current tax and regulatory structures remain unchanged for any Morgan's Point operations
Who it affects
This primarily affects Bermuda taxpayers who will fund the company's operations and any potential future residents, businesses, or visitors to Morgan's Point once it's developed. Government employees in finance and public works ministries will also be involved in overseeing the new company.
