Government Bill Passed 2019/2020

Motor Car and Road Traffic Miscellaneous Amendment Act

Simplified for You

What this bill does

This bill updates several motor vehicle and traffic laws in Bermuda from the 1940s and 1950s. The main changes include new rules about motorcycle towing, vehicle lighting, licensing schedules, and allows larger vehicles for maintenance work at the Royal Naval Dockyard.

If passed (voted YES)

  • Motorcycles and auxiliary cycles will be banned from towing other motorcycles or auxiliary cycles on roads
  • Vehicle licenses will expire on the owner's birthday for private cars, making renewal schedules more personalized
  • Minicars can be larger and more powerful (up to 40 horsepower instead of 20), and WEDCO can use bigger maintenance vehicles at the Dockyard
  • License plate colors will change from white-on-black to black-on-white for most vehicles, and duplicate license fees increase from 60 cents to $17.30

If rejected (voted NO)

  • Current motorcycle towing rules remain unchanged (unclear regulations)
  • Vehicle license expiration dates stay on the current fixed calendar schedule for all vehicle types
  • Minicar size and power limits remain at current lower levels, and Dockyard maintenance vehicle restrictions stay the same
  • Current license plate color schemes continue, and duplicate license fees stay at 60 cents

Who it affects

This affects all motor vehicle and motorcycle owners in Bermuda, especially those who need to renew licenses or want larger minicars. WEDCO and Royal Naval Dockyard operations will also be impacted by the maintenance vehicle changes.
