Municipalities Amendment Act 2023
Simplified for You
What this bill does
This bill changes how often Bermuda holds municipal elections. Instead of voting for town and city council members every three years, elections would happen every two years.
If passed (voted YES)
- Municipal elections (for Hamilton, St. George's, and other incorporated areas) would be held every 2 years instead of every 3 years
- Voters would get to choose their local council representatives more frequently
- Municipal councillors would serve shorter terms before facing re-election
If rejected (voted NO)
- Municipal elections would continue to happen every 3 years as they do now
- Current councillors would continue serving their full 3-year terms
- No changes to the existing municipal election schedule
Who it affects
This affects all registered voters in Bermuda's municipalities (Hamilton, St. George's, and other incorporated areas) and the councillors they elect to represent them on local issues.
