Simplified for You
What this bill does
This bill allows people with workplace pension plans to make another one-time early withdrawal of up to $6,000 from their retirement savings, even if they're not yet at retirement age. It also makes temporary pension withdrawal rules that were already in use since July 2021 officially legal.
If passed (voted YES)
- Workers and former workers can withdraw up to $6,000 from their pension plans early, even if they already took money out under previous emergency withdrawal programs
- People who withdrew pension money between July 2021 and March 2022 under temporary rules will have their withdrawals officially recognized as legal
- The government can set specific time periods when these withdrawals are allowed
If rejected (voted NO)
- People cannot make this additional $6,000 early withdrawal from their pensions
- Previous withdrawals made between July 2021-March 2022 might remain in legal uncertainty
- Only the existing pension withdrawal rules would continue to apply
Who it affects
This primarily affects Bermuda workers and former workers who have workplace pension plans or local retirement products and need access to their retirement savings before reaching normal retirement age.
