Pharmacy and Poisons Amendment Act 2022
Simplified for You
What this bill does
This bill adds one new member to Bermuda's Pharmacy Council - someone with legal or ethical expertise who is not a pharmacist. It also gives the Council Chairman the deciding vote when the Council is split 50/50 on decisions, since adding this new member creates an even number of people on the Council.
If passed (voted YES)
- The Health Minister will appoint a legal or ethics expert (who is not a pharmacist) to join the Pharmacy Council
- The Council Chairman will have the power to break tie votes when members are evenly split on decisions
- The Pharmacy Council will have broader expertise when making decisions about pharmacy regulations and ethical issues
If rejected (voted NO)
- The Pharmacy Council keeps its current membership without adding the legal/ethics expert
- Tie votes on the Council would continue to be handled under the current rules
- The Council continues operating with its existing structure and voting procedures
Who it affects
This primarily affects pharmacists and the pharmacy industry in Bermuda, as the Pharmacy Council regulates their profession. It may also indirectly affect patients and consumers who use pharmacy services, as Council decisions impact how pharmacies operate.
