Public Health Amendment Act

What this bill does

This bill changes Bermuda's Public Health Act to expand who can be a Public Health Officer and creates a new system where people can get tickets (like parking tickets) for breaking COVID-19 health rules. Instead of going straight to court, people can pay a fine to avoid criminal charges.

If passed (voted YES)

• More health professionals (like Chief Nursing Officers and public health nurses) can enforce COVID-19 rules and issue tickets
• People breaking COVID-19 rules can get tickets with fines up to $1,500 and avoid criminal records if they pay within 28 days
• Health officers can stop people on the street to check their identity and ask if they're following COVID-19 rules

If rejected (voted NO)

• Only current Public Health Officers can enforce COVID-19 rules (fewer people authorized)
• COVID-19 rule-breakers must go through the full criminal court system for any violations
• No ticket system exists - all COVID-19 enforcement continues through traditional criminal procedures
