Water Resources Amendment Act 2024
Simplified for You
What this bill does
This bill strengthens Bermuda's water protection laws by giving government officials more power to prevent and clean up pollution in our drinking water, groundwater, and ocean water. It creates new enforcement tools like pollution stop orders and increases fines for water pollution violations.
If passed (voted YES)
- Government inspectors can more easily enter properties, take water samples, and order immediate cleanup when pollution is found
- Much higher fines for water pollution - up to $20,000 instead of current lower amounts
- Property owners must report fuel spills, chemical leaks, and sewage discharges that could contaminate water supplies
- Officials can force polluters to pay for expensive cleanup and monitoring, including digging up contaminated soil
If rejected (voted NO)
- Current weaker enforcement powers remain, making it harder to stop water pollution quickly
- Lower fines stay in place, which may not deter serious polluters
- No requirement for automatic reporting of spills and leaks that threaten water quality
- Limited ability to force comprehensive cleanup of contaminated areas
Who it affects
This affects all Bermuda residents who depend on clean water, plus businesses and property owners who store fuel, chemicals, or generate waste that could pollute water sources. Boat owners and industrial facilities will face stricter reporting and cleanup requirements.
