MINISTRY OF EDUCATION
OFFICE OF THE MINISTER
Staff have received training with the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI). This training incorporates
trauma-informed care (TIC) as a foundational element of its training, providing a framework for
staff to understand how trauma impacts behavior and how to respond with empathy and a focus
on prevention. This connection is integrated into the entire CPI philosophy of "Care, Welfare,
Safety, and Security" (CWSS).
A central goal of the CPI approach is to avoid re-traumatizing individuals during a crisis.
CPI training emphasizes that distressed or "defensive" behavior is often a form of
communication or a trauma-reactive response, rather than a deliberate act of defiance.
This shift in perspective helps staff remain "rationally detached" and respond with
compassion instead of escalating the situation.
